Becoming a leader is synonymous with becoming yourself. It is precisely that simple, and precisely that difficult.” With these words by scholar and Leadership Studies Consultant, Warren G. Bennis, in mind, the Leadership Seminar series of courses was born at Holy Family Academy. Leadership Seminar takes into account student mindsets in their freshman-senior year and gives them a place to focus on developing themselves and their leadership skills at the same time with a focus on post-secondary planning. Leadership Seminar is divided into three trimesters. In the first trimester, students will create artifacts based on their individual identities through Thrively.com and other resources. This will force them to grow in their self-understanding and they will present what they learned about themselves in a professional way at our first public Student Exhibition on November 20th. In the second trimester, a stronger focus will be set on entrepreneurship skills such as networking and public speaking through a human-centered design project involving a community partner. This project will be presented at the second Student Exhibition on February 15th. The third trimester connects these skills to their Science and Cultural Literacy content knowledge through a larger interdisciplinary project based on the Big Picture Learning Schools model. The results of this project will be presented at the third Student Exhibition on May 23rd. As a result of this course, students will be prepared to enter their (next) year with a better understanding of themselves, a focus on their future, and the ability to lead in the professional world.
